Jon Powell

Jon received a BS degree in Geology from Virginia Tech. He then moved to Colorado for graduate schooland received an MS degree in Geology focused on mineral deposits and exploration from ColoradoSchool of Mines. Following grad school, Jon worked for 5 years for a small gold exploration company based out of Denver, working on projects in Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. Jon then moved to Elko, NV to work for Newmont Gold on the Carlin Trend. Jon worked at most of Newmont’s gold deposits at Carlin over 14 years, doing surface and underground production, development, and exploration geology, was involved with the development of the Deep Post underground mine, and spent a year off trend with the Generative Exploration group at the Northumberland gold-silver deposit. When Newmont acquired Fronteer Gold in 2011, Jon went to the Long Canyon deposit as the Chief Geologist, where the team drilled out and expanded the deposit in preparation for production. After the Long Canyon gold mine was successfully in full production, Jon moved to the Generative Exploration and Projects teams for a couple of years at various properties in Nevada and Utah. With the creation of the Nevada Gold Mines joint venture between Newmont and Barrick in 2019, Jon returned to the Carlin Trend as part of the Carlin Exploration team.
